Rabies remains a significant public health concern in the Philippines, with dog-mediated transmissions contributing to some of the highest human rabies incidences in Asia. Despite ongoing rabies control and prevention efforts, including mass dog vaccination campaigns like the recent initiative in Iloilo targeting 70% of the dog population, rabies continues to pose a risk. The goal of these campaigns is to create herd immunity, reducing the chance of rabies spreading to humans.
While dogs are the primary source of rabies transmission to humans, it's important to remember that other animals can also carry the rabies virus. These include cats, cattle, pigs, horses, monkeys, and bats. Therefore, it's essential to be cautious around all animals, even those that appear healthy.
