Celebrated every December, Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) Consciousness Week raises awareness about common ENT conditions, including laryngitis.
Laryngitis is the inflammation of the voice box (larynx), which often results in a hoarse or raspy voice. It can be caused by one or more of the following:
Overuse: Excessive talking, shouting, or singing.
Irritation: Triggered by acid reflux, cigarette or vape smoke, or allergies.
Infection: Typically due to colds or flu.
Symptoms of Laryngitis
Alongside hoarseness, other symptoms include:
Sore throat
Dry cough
Difficulty swallowing
Treatment for Laryngitis
The treatment approach depends on the underlying cause:
1. If due to Overuse, Irritation, or Infection:
Rest your voice for at least a week. Speak softly if necessary, but avoid whispering.
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to keep your throat moist.
Avoid excessive throat clearing.
2. If due to Irritation:
Limit coffee and alcohol intake.
Avoid eating right before bedtime.
Stay upright for 30 minutes to an hour after eating to reduce acid reflux.
Steer clear of cigarette or vape smoke.
Consult your doctor to determine if antihistamines are necessary for allergies.
3. If due to Infection:
If bacterial, consult a doctor to see if antibiotics are required. In most cases, supportive measures are sufficient.
When to Consult a Doctor
If your symptoms persist or worsen, it’s essential to seek professional medical advice.
