August is National Lung Month in the Philippines, as designated by Presidential Proclamation No. 1761.
In April 2024, the country recorded its first death related to vaping, a case of e-cigarette or vape-associated lung injury (EVALI). The victim was a 22-year-old male who had been previously healthy and active. He experienced severe lung injury and chest tightness, ultimately succumbing to a heart attack.
The Impact of Vaping on Lung Health
Despite containing less nicotine than traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes can still lead to nicotine dependence and addiction over time. Additionally, toxic compounds in e-cigarette aerosols can cause serious lung conditions, including asthma, bronchitis, and lung cancer.
E-cigarette aerosols may also be harmful to others, as secondhand emissions can contain benzene (a chemical found in car exhaust) and heavy metals such as nickel, tin, and lead.
Is vaping safer than smoking cigarettes?
Vaping is not a safe or effective alternative to smoking cigarettes. It has been shown to have significant negative health effects, rather than being a "less harmful" option. If you are looking to quit smoking, consult your doctor for safe and proven methods. Do not rely on vaping as a solution.
