Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): Find out if you're at risk.


The Philippine Health Statistics (2019) has shown that Hypertension was the second leading cause cause of morbidity in the Philippines, following acute respiratory tract infection. Hypertension occurs when the force of blood against the walls of your blood vessels becomes too strong due to various factors such as genetics, age, and unhealthy lifestyle habits.


Understanding Blood Pressure Readings

Know if your blood pressure reading is normal.

Normal blood pressure

Systolic <120, Diastolic < 80

Elevated blood pressure

Systolic 120-129, Diastolic < 80

Hypertension Stage I

Systolic 130-139, Diastolic 80-89

Hypertension Stage II

Systolic ≥140, Diastolic ≥90

Who’s most at risk?

  • Older individuals (the risk increases with advancing age)

  • Individuals with obesity

  • Individuals with a family history of hypertension (i.e. relatives who had or have high blood pressure)

  • Individuals who consume a lot of sodium (salt) in their diet

  • Individuals who drink a lot of alcohol

  • Individuals who do not get a lot of physical activity


Complications of Hypertension

  • Heart failure

  • Heart attack (myocardial infarction)

  • Stroke

  • Kidney failure


How to Prevent High Blood Pressure/ Hypertension

  • Reduce the amount of salt in your diet

  • Lose weight if you are overweight or have obesity

  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol

  • Stop smoking

  • Exercise at least 30 minutes per day most days of the week
